Department of Philosophy
Brief Introduction of the Department
The Department of Philosophy of the Diamond Harbour Women’s University was set up in the year 2016 with 23 students and three young and energetic resource persons. Three permanent faculties have joined the department in the post of assistant professor by the end of 2017. The department currently offers only the Post Graduate degree course in Philosophy (Master of Arts, i.e. M.A.). At present (2018) there are five faculties (three permanent faculties and two resource persons) and total forty six students (1st semester 28 students and 3rd semester- 18 students). In 2018, the department has set up its Board of Studies (BoS). All the students of the first outgoing batch of 2018 have secured first class.
To set the right standards and with the aim to become a centre of excellence in Philosophy, our Department is making sincere efforts to maintain high standard of teaching and learning. Teachers of the department use different modern and effective learning methods alongside the traditional chalk and board to teach the students. The department also arranges for seminars and special lectures by eminent professors to widen and strengthen the knowledge base of the students. Apart from the regular classes, additional classes are also taken to help prepare the students for competitive examinations related to higher studies and jobs (like NET, SET). These help broadening the philosophical acumen. Both the teachers and students are proud to be part of this department where everyone is putting their best efforts to keep the light of learning shine and maintain high standard of teaching. These, we believe, would help us attain academic excellence in due course. The teachers also constantly keep them self-updated through participation in various workshops, seminars, refresher courses, and attending national/international conferences as relevant. The aim of the department is not merely to acquaint the students with the different emerging trends of philosophy but also to enhance their abilities to implement such knowledge in their practical life to make their mark in the different fields of life.
