Academic Events: Seminars, Conferences, Workshops & Symposia

Diamond Harbour Women’s University organises various academic events like seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia, and special lectures throughout the year to facilitate interdisciplinary intellectual exchanges and to inspire the students to achieve higher academic pursuits. So far, the University has obtained funds from the Department of Higher Education, Science and Technology and Bio-Technology, Government of West Bengal. Some other events have been organised entirely with the University funds.

The Rokeya Memorial Lecture

Diamond Harbour Women’s University organizes the Rokeya Memorial Lecture to commemorate the immense contributions of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain in the field of women’s education, particularly pertaining to the minority classes. The themes of the Rokeya Memorial Lectures generally include, but may not be limited to, topics related to the emancipation and education of women, women in texts, the corpus of female authors and so on.

The First Rokeya Memorial Lecture, 2016, was delivered by Prof. Sutapa Bhattacharya, former Director of Ravindra Bhavan, and Former Professor, Department of Bengali, Visva Bharati, on the 9th December 2019 to commemorate the birth and death anniversary of Rokeya.

INTERNATIONAL / NATIONAL / STATE-LEVEL SEMINAR

Department of Physics

A one day Seminar was organized by the Department of Physics on 28th November, 2018 titled: “125th Birth Anniversary of S. N. Bose and M. N. Saha – A Tribute to two doyens of Indian Science”. Two eminent scientists, Prof. Atri Mukhopadhaya, formerly Sr. Professor of SINP, Kolkata delivered a talk on - “The crisis in science : Satyendra Nath Bose and Meghnad Saha” and Prof. Bikash K. Chakrabarty, Emeritus Professor, SNBNCBC, Kolkata delivered a talk on – ‘Econophysics of income and wealth Distributions’

Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science organized a one day National Seminar titled “India in South Asia: Challenges and Opportunities” on 22nd November, 2018. The seminar aimed at exploring the various themes related to India and South Asia, analyzing with critical insight, the challenges emanating and the potential opportunities latent, in the region. Prof Anindyojyoti Majumdar, Dept. of International Relations, Jadavpur University was the keynote speaker and he spoke on -India in South Asia-A Geopolitical Narrative.

Department of English

The Department of English organised its First National Symposium titled “The World within I doubly Prize . . .”: Reassessing Emily Brontë at 200 on 16th November, 2018, in collaboration with Centre for Victorian Studies, Jadavpur University.

Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy, organized a One Day State Level Seminar, Commemorating World Philosophy Day on 15th November, 2018 titled ‘Man and Environment: Some Philosophical Reflections’

Prof. Santosh Kr. Pal, Dept. of Philosophy, the University of Burdwan, delivered a lecture on Atharvaveda’s Bhumisukta and Leopold’s Land Ethic: A Comparative Study on Man-Nature Relationship and. Smt. Sharmistha Dhar, Dept. of Philosophy, DHWU spoke on Respect for Non-Human Form of Life: An Argument for the Moral Indefensibility of Use and Abysmal Suffering of Animals in Cultural Practices.

Department of Education

On 3rd September, 2018, the Department of Education organized an International Seminar on the theme ‘Contemporary Issues of Women Education in the Global Context’. Along with international speaker Prof. Mesbah Kamal, Professor, Department of History, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, there were other eminent international and national speakers who graced the occasion and shared their valuable opinions on the issue. The welcome address of the seminar was delivered by the Honourable Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Anuradha Mukhopadhyay. About 155 research papers of teachers, scholars and students from Kerala, Goa, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Sikkim and other states were presented in the seminar. The seminar was funded by Department of Higher Education, Science & Technology and Bio-Technology, Govt. of West Bengal.



TALKS AND SPECIAL LECTURES

  • On the 5th January, 2019, Prof. J. R. B. Alfred, Former Director, The Zoological Survey of India, delivered a special lecture on biodiversity and conservation in the Department of Zoology.
  • On the 10th October, 2018, Professor Jayati Gupta, Former Professor of West Bengal State University and Tagore National Fellow for Cultural Research, delivered a Special Lecture on 'Texts and Contexts of Restoration and Augustan Literatures', in the Department of English.
  • On 9th October, 2018, the Department of History has organized two special lectures: Prof. Sanjoy Mukhopadhyay, Former Professor, Department of Film Studies, Jadavpur University, delivered a Special Lecture on ‘Why does Nita Cry: A Journey into her Tears’; while Dr. Basabi Chakraborty, Coordinator, Department of Sociology, Rabindra Bharati University, delivered a special lecture on ‘Feminism and Women’s Writing with Special Reference to Poetry’.
  • On 5th October, 2018, Prof. Amiya P. Sen, Former Professor, Jamia Milia Islamia University, Delhi, delivered a Special Lecture on ‘Ouponibeshik Bharate Samajsanskar Andolon Notun Poriprekshite’, in the Department of History.
  • On 30th August, 2018, Professor Ratna Dutta Sharma, Former Professor in Philosophy, Jadavpur University, delivered a Special Lecture on 'Nyaya Exposition on Katha', in the Department of Philosophy.
  • On 20th August, 2018, Prof Sonia Nishat Amin, Department of History, University of Dhaka, delivered a Special Lecture on ‘Rokeya’s Articulation of the Women’s Question in Early Twentieth Century Bengal’, in the Department of History.
  • On the 27th July, 2018, Prof. Sumita Roy, Former Professor, Osmania University, Hyderabad, delivered a Special Lecture on “Mythical and Spiritual Overtones in T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land”, in the Department of English.

Department of Bengali

On 6th and 7th March 2018, the Department of Bengali organized an International Seminar on the theme ‘Unish Sattok: Bangla Sahitya and Sanskriti’. The seminar was funded by Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal.

Department of History

On 24 August 2017 the Department of History in collaboration with Lady Brabourne College organized an International Seminar on the theme ‘Beyond the Veil: Muslim Women in South Asia’. The speakers in the seminar were Selina Hossain, Maleka Begum and Basabi Chakrabarty. The seminar was funded by Women’s Studies Centre, Lady Brabourne College and was held in Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata.

On 21-22 August 2017 the Department of History organized an International Seminar on the theme ‘Revisiting and Remembering Partition: Issues related to Eastern and North-Eastern India’. The speakers in the seminar were Prof Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, Prof Sajal Nag, Prof Ashfaque Hossain, Tanveer Mokammel and Dr Binayak Dutta. The seminar was funded by Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal.



TALKS AND SPECIAL LECTURES

  • On the 8th June 2018, Arun Bandyopadhyay, Former Nurul Hassan Professor, Department of History, University of Calcutta, delivered a special lecture on Western Historiography, in the Department of History.
  • On 11 May 2018, the Department of History organized a special lecture by Prof Bhaskar Chakraborty, Former Centenary Professor of International Relations, Department of History, University of Calcutta, on Post-Modernism and the Challenges of History.
  • On the 10th May 2018, the Department of History organized a Special Lecture by Dr. Urvi Mukhopadhyay, Associate Professor, Department of History, West Bengal State University, on Myth and History: Medieval India.
  • On the 20th April 2018, Dr Sudarshana Sen, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Gour Banga, delivered a Special Lecture on Methods of Sociological Research, in the Department of History.
  • On the 12th April, 2018, Prof. Prof. Shrabani Pal, Rabindra Bharati University, delivered a special lecture on Biharilal Chakrabarty in the Department of Bengali. On the same date, the Department of History organized two special lectures by Dr. Simonti Sen, Director, Directorate of State Archives, Government of West Bengal, and Dr. Debdatta Chowdhury, Assistant Professor of Gender Studies, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata, on ‘Mahafezkhana o Itihas Rachana’, and Indian Historiography respectively.
  • On the 10th March 2018, the Department of Philosophy organized a Special Lecture by Professor Ratna Dutta Sharma, Former Professor in Philosophy, Jadavpur University, A brief introduction on Nyaya Philosophy.
  • On the 27th February 2018, the Department of History organized a special lecture by Dr Rajat Sanyal, Assistant Professor, Department of Archaeology, University of Calcutta, on Archaeology for our Historical Past: Methodological Issues.
  • On 17 January 2018, the Department of Education organized a special lecture by Prof. Manasendu Kundu, Department of Anthropology, University of California, on Women’s Power, Powerlessness, and Empowerment: Understanding the Relevant Issues from an Anthropological Perspective.
  • On the 23rd November, 2017, the Department of History organized two special lectures by Prof Sujata Mukherjee, Professor, Department of History, Rabindra Bharati University, and Dr. Shamita Sarkar, Associate Professor, Department of History, Vidyasagar University, on ‘Gender and Medical Education in British India’ and ‘Towards a Social History of Medicine and Public Health in Colonial India’ respectively.
  • On 21st September, 2017, Prof. Subir Dhar, Former Professor of English, Rabindra Bharati University, delivered a Special Lecture on “Simplifying Theory”, in the Department of English.
  • On the 4th September, 2017, Prof. Niladri Chatterjee, Professor of English, University of Kalyani, delivered a Special Lecture on “Why Masculinity Studies”, in the Department of English.
  • On the 20th July, 2017, the Departments of History and Bengali jointly organized two special lectures on ‘Kadambini Gangopadhyay’ and ‘Ashapurna Devi’s Fiction’ by Barun Chattopadhyay, Writer and Researcher, and Prof Gopa Datta Bhowmik, Professor, Department of Bengali, Jadavpur University, respectively.

Department of Bengali

On 8th and 9th November 2016 the Department of Bengali organized an International Seminar on the theme ‘Swadhinotar Paroborti Dui Banglar Ancholik Sahitya’. The seminar was funded by Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal.

Department of Women’s Studies

A two day National Seminar was organised on 8th and 9th March 2017 supported by Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal. Many eminent personalities participated and presented their valued speeches in the International Women’s Day Celebration Programme. Debate, poster competition and cultural programme were also organized as a part of the celebrations.



TALKS AND SPECIAL LECTURES

  • On 8 June 2017, the Department of History organised a special lecture by Dr. Deepita Chakravarty, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Ambedkar University, on Why does child marriage persist in West Bengal.
  • On 17 May 2017, the Department of History organised two special lectures by Nigel Akkara , Actor and Social Worker, and Dr Tumpa Mukherjee, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Women’s Christian College, Kolkata, on Reminiscing the Past and Moving towards the Future, and Corporal Punishment to Rehabilitation of Prisoners, respectively.
  • On 4 May 2017, the Department of English organized two special lectures by Prof. Krishna Sen, Former Professor, Department of English, University of Calcutta, and Prof. Nandini Bhattacharya, Professor, Department of English and Culture Studies, the University of Burdwan, on “Post-Nationalism: The New Debates”, and “The Novel” respectively.
  • On 29 April 2017, the Department of Education organised a special lecture by Prof. Bijan Sarkar, Professor, Department of Education, Kalyani University, Nadia, West Bengal, on Globalization and its Impact on Education.
  • On 8 April 2017, the Department of Education organized a special lecture by Dr. Sripida Sinha, Associate Professor, Department of Education, University of Calcutta, on National Knowledge Commission.
  • On 18 March 2017, the Department of Education organised a special lecture by Dr. Nandita Chaudhuri, Associate Professor, Department of Education, Rani Birla Girls’ College, on Distance Education.
  • On 4 March 2017, the Department of Education organised a special lecture by Prof. Debasri Banerjee, Professor, Department of Education, University of Calcutta, on Inclusiveness in Education.
  • On 8 February 2017, the Department of History and the Department of Women’s Studies jointly organised a special lecture by Geraldine Forbes, Distinguished Teaching Professor Emerita, State University of New York Oswego, USA, on Researching Women’s Lives: History and Photography in Colonial India.
  • On 4 October 2016, the Department of English organised a special lecture by Dr. Arpita Chattaraj Mukhopadhyay, Associate Professor, Department of English and Culture Studies, the University of Burdwan, on ‘Feminisms’.
  • On 25 February 2017, the Department of Education organised a special lecture by Dr. Sonali Chakrabarti, Associate Professor, Department of Education, Sivanath Sastri College, Kolkata on Education as a Human Right.
