Brief Introduction of the Department

The Department of History was established in 2013.Intially the Department was run by guest lecturers from eminent institutions. The Department had conducted major visits, study tours as well. The coordinator of the department then was Tapati Sengupta, an ex-professor of Loreto College. Under her guidance and with the help of a syllabus Committee under the supervision of then vice Chancellor Dr. Samita Sen a working syllabus was formed. Gradually interviews were held and permanent faculty members joined in the Department. Alongside this more and more relevant books were bought for the library. The Department initially started with 26 students. The first batch passed out in year 2015.The department has often collaborated with many other departments in seminars, lectures and study tour. Many occasions were celebrated by the students of the Department such as teacher’s day, Independence Day, International Women’s Day and so on.

Students’ Participation in Extension Activities

Students of the Department participated in several awareness programmes conducted by the West Bengal Police under the banner of Swayangsiddha in March and April 2017.

The MPhil and PhD scholars of the Department along with the students of the Department of Women’s Studies participated in an outreach programme in Birbhum on 29 October 2018. They were accompanied by Dr Aparna Bandyopadhyay and Dr Sonali Naskar.

Dr Aparna Bandyopadhyay and Dr Sonali Naskar along with a few students of the Departments of History and Women’s Studies conducted a Gender Awareness Programme at Sundarban College, Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas on 12 October 2018.
